Listening to and Downloading Music for Free

There are two ways to enjoy free music online: free streaming and free downloads. If you read through the details below you can listen to lots of music for free.

Free Streaming

All music download sites allow you to listen to 30-60 seconds of a track before you buy. Both Rhapsody and Napster allow you to hear full length tracks on your computer for free.

Napster

On Napster you can listen to every track up to 3 times for FREE. That's lots of music. No credit card in necessary to sign up. I believe that this free subscription is only available in the US and Canada.

Rhapsody

On Rhapsody you can listen up to 25 full-length tracks each month. No credit card is necessary to sign up for the free account.

Free Downloads

The online music stores have free trial periods where you can download free MP3s. You do need to supply a credit card, but you can sign up, get your free downloads and cancel the subscription. This is not cheating; the providers are hoping you will stay on as a customer, but you are under no obligation to do so.

Make sure you cancel before the trial period is over if you want to avoid charges on your credit card!!

eMusic

eMusic is the best online deal. You get a fixed number of downloads every month (price is 26 to 33 cents per track depending on your plan). More importantly they are the only major provider that has no DRM (copy protection). So you can burn as many CDs as you like and copy downloads to an unlimited number of computers and portable MP3 players.

eMusic has a free 14 days trial subscription. During this period you can download 25 free MP3s that are yours to keep even if you cancel.

SuperPass

Real has a program called SuperPass where you can download music, video and games. They give you 10 free downloads and a free game for trying.
